Peace Gives Us Roots. Playfulness Gives Us Wings

Let's explore two seemingly opposite principles, both needed for us to thrive: predictability and novelty.

First, let’s look at predictability. Our nervous systems crave stability.

There is something deeply calming about knowing what comes next. A familiar morning routine. A home that feels safe. People who do what they say they will do. Work we can count on. Rhythms and rituals that give our days a gentle structure.

Stability. Predictability. Reliability. Routine.

These things tell the nervous system, You can rest here.

When life becomes too unpredictable, we can find ourselves constantly bracing. Waiting for the next problem. Trying to anticipate what someone else will do. Making contingency plans for our contingency plans.

Even good surprises can become exhausting when there are too many of them.

There is a beautiful kind of freedom that comes from having enough certainty that we no longer have to spend all our energy preparing for what might happen next.

But if we’re honest, we can admit that there’s also something unsettling in the blessing of safety. Certainty isn’t the whole story.

Because while our nervous systems may crave predictability, something else within us longs for discovery.

Our creative spirit needs novelty.

We need experiences that make us curious again. New ideas. New people. New places. New music. New questions.

We need conversations that wander somewhere unexpected.

We need to make something without knowing whether it will be any good.

We need to occasionally take a different road home simply because we’ve never been down that street before.

We need play. And play lives in the realm of possibility, where the terrain is uncertain and outcomes are not guaranteed.

Maybe a balanced life isn’t one in which we finally eliminate uncertainty.

Maybe it’s one in which we create enough stability that we feel safe enough to explore.

Peace gives us roots. Playfulness gives us wings.

And we need both.

Too much unpredictability and life can feel chaotic.

Too much predictability and life can begin to feel very small.

The sweet spot may be creating a life with a reliable foundation and leaving some windows open for surprise.

A life where our routines restore us rather than imprison us.

Where our boundaries protect what matters without becoming walls around our lives.

Where we can say “no” clearly enough that our “yes” still has aliveness.

Where we aren’t simply responding to the expectations of other people, but discovering what we actually think, want, believe and want to create.

Becoming free.

Agency. Boundaries. Curiosity. Creativity. Community.

And maybe a little more room to ask:

What else is possible?

Come Explore With Us

On October 3, I’m gathering a virtual community of women who want to explore questions like these through my Free to Break Through Mastermind Meetup.

I envision it as both a safe harbor and a creative playground.

A place for thoughtful conversation about creativity, philosophy, psychology and personal development.

A place to explore what it means to become more free, to exercise agency in our own lives, to create healthy boundaries, to listen to ourselves and to imagine what might come next.

You don’t need to arrive with answers.

Bring your questions.

Bring your curiosity.

Bring the part of you that wants peace.

And bring the part of you that still wants to play.

Why Women?

I believe deeply in spaces where all of us can learn from one another, across gender, age, background and experience. And I also believe there is something powerful about women occasionally gathering just with other women.

Many of us have spent years caring for others, meeting expectations, carrying responsibility and becoming extraordinarily good at being who the world needed us to be.

I want to create a space where, for a little while, we can set those roles down and listen for our own voices. A space where women can speak candidly about ambition, identity, caregiving, creativity, boundaries, aging, reinvention and whatever else is emerging in our lives.

This isn’t about separating ourselves from the wider world. It’s about creating a particular kind of room within it, one where women can exhale, explore and ask, perhaps more freely: What do I want now?

Join us October 3 at 10 AM for our very first virtual gathering.

I much prefer gathering in person, don’t you? There’s something special about being together in the same room. But until we can do that, we’ll let technology work its magic and help us overcome geography.

We’ll start by gathering online, getting to know one another, and building our community. Then, as we grow, we’ll branch out into in-person gatherings and experiences, too.

For now, grab your coffee or tea, find a cozy spot, and come join us. I can’t wait to gather with you!

Together, let’s create lives spacious enough for both peace and possibility.
