The Courage to Be Seen: What's Standing Between You and Your Next Awakening?
Share
What a beautiful gathering of hearts and minds we had at Breakthrough Masterminds on Wednesday! Our conversation was rich with insight, vulnerability, and the kind of connection that reminds me why I love bringing people together to explore life's deeper questions.
This week, we explored the A in BALANCE: Awakening, and its connection to the second chakra, the energetic center traditionally associated with passion, creativity, pleasure, and emotional expression.
We began with a question: What awakening brought you to this season of your life?
As we shared our stories, something beautiful emerged. Awakening doesn't always look the same.
Sometimes awakening leads to expression. We discover a voice, a gift, a passion, or a truth that can no longer remain hidden.
Sometimes awakening leads to acceptance. We stop resisting what is, release our attachment to how things should be, and discover peace in embracing life as it unfolds.
And sometimes awakening leads to unity. We begin to see beyond our differences, recognize ourselves in one another, and experience a deeper connection to the divine and to all of life.
But awakening can also bring us face-to-face with something uncomfortable: the ways we've been holding ourselves back.
Are You Living Your Dream or Standing in Its Shadow?
One of the most fascinating parts of our discussion centered on Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way and her concept of shadow artists.
Shadow artists are people who are drawn to the creative lives they secretly long to live themselves. They surround themselves with writers, musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and visionaries, finding ways to participate in the creative energy without fully stepping into their own.
Perhaps you love spending time with authors but have never written the book that's been living inside you. Perhaps you're inspired by entrepreneurs but haven't dared to launch your own idea. Perhaps you admire people who speak boldly and authentically, while carefully editing your own voice.
There's nothing wrong with celebrating the gifts of others. But sometimes our admiration is also an invitation.
What if the qualities we admire most in others are reflections of possibilities waiting to awaken within ourselves?
And what if we're not afraid because we lack the talent, resources, or opportunity?
What if we're afraid to be seen?
The Hidden Fear Beneath Our Dreams
We often think fear of failure is what holds us back. But sometimes we're just as afraid of succeeding. Because success changes things.
-If I write my memoir, people might discover things about me I've never shared.
-If I start my business, I might have to think of myself as an entrepreneur.
-If I express my gifts fully, I might attract attention, criticism, expectations, or even envy.
-And if I become the person I know I'm capable of becoming, will I still belong?
This is where I believe some of our deepest resistance lives. We develop identities that help us feel safe and accepted. We learn which parts of ourselves are celebrated and which are better kept quiet. Over time, those protective patterns can become limitations we no longer recognize. We tell ourselves we're too busy, too old, too inexperienced, or not quite ready. But beneath those explanations, there may be a quieter truth:
I'm afraid of what might change if I allow myself to become fully expressed.
Here's an insight worth sitting with:
Sometimes the limitation isn't our ability to achieve the dream. It's our willingness to become the person who lives it.
And that's why awakening requires more than inspiration. It asks us to develop a new relationship with fear.
You Don't Have to Become Fearless to Become Free
One of the most liberating realizations we explored is that we don't have to eliminate fear before moving forward. We can learn to move with it. When we approach fear with curiosity rather than judgment, we begin to loosen its grip. Instead of asking, "Why can't I just make myself do this?" we might ask, "What am I trying to protect myself from?"
That question changes everything.
Maybe we're protecting ourselves from rejection. Perhaps we're afraid of disappointing someone. Perhaps we're holding on to an identity that once served us but no longer fits. When we understand what fear is trying to protect, we can begin to distinguish between genuine danger and the discomfort of growth. And then we can take action, not by forcing ourselves into a giant leap, but by creating a pathway that feels possible.
Three Steps Toward Your Next Awakening
I believe awakening becomes transformational when we move beyond awareness into intentional action.
Here's a simple practice to help bridge that gap.
1. Recognize: Listen to the Longing
What keeps calling to you? Maybe it's a creative project, a new career, a relationship, a spiritual practice, or a different way of living. Notice the desires that keep returning, even after you've tried to dismiss them. Instead of immediately asking whether they're practical, ask what they might be revealing about you. Our longings don't always tell us exactly what to do, but they can offer important clues about what matters most.
Reflection: What part of myself is asking for greater expression?
2. Release: Question the Story
Once you've identified the longing, notice what happens next. What does your mind tell you?
-I'm not talented enough. I don't have time. It's too late.
-People will judge me.
-I might fail.
-Or maybe, I might succeed, and then everything will change.
Mindfulness and meditation can help us recognize these thoughts without automatically accepting them as truth. Julia Cameron offers another powerful approach through the creative practices in The Artist's Way, including morning pages, a daily stream-of-consciousness writing practice that helps clear mental clutter and uncover hidden feelings, and artist dates, intentional time spent nurturing our creative selves. These practices help us make space between the stories we've inherited and the possibilities we want to explore.
Reflection: What belief am I ready to question, even if I'm not quite ready to release it?
3. Respond: Take One Beautifully Small Step
Here's where awakening becomes action. We often overwhelm ourselves by focusing on the enormity of our dreams.
-I want to write a memoir. That means hundreds of pages!
-I want to start a business. That means a business plan, funding, marketing, and a thousand decisions!
-I want to change my life. Where would I even begin?
But what if we made the first step so small that it no longer felt intimidating?
Instead of writing a chapter of your memoir, write a paragraph. Instead of launching a business, spend fifteen minutes exploring your idea. Instead of committing to an hour of meditation every day, begin with five minutes of stillness. Small steps matter because they create experiences of possibility. They help us build trust in our ability to act, even when uncertainty remains. And sometimes, once we've begun, we discover that the next step isn't nearly as frightening as we imagined.
Reflection: What is one small action I can take in the next 24 hours to honor what wants to awaken within me?
A Five-Minute Practice to Begin Your Breakthrough
Before you move on with your day, I invite you to find a quiet place, close your eyes, and take a few slow, intentional breaths.
Allow yourself to become still.
Imagine, for a moment, that you don't have to prove anything to anyone. You don't have to justify your desires, explain your dreams, or know how everything will unfold.
You simply have permission to listen.
Ask yourself:
What is longing to awaken within me?
Notice what comes. It might be an image, a memory, a feeling, a word, or a possibility you've been carrying for years.
Now ask:
What am I afraid might happen if I allow this part of myself to emerge?
Meet whatever arises with compassion.
And finally:
What is one small step I could take to welcome this awakening into my life?
When you're ready, open your eyes and write down what you discovered.
You don't need a complete plan.
You only need a beginning.
What Is Waiting to Awaken Next?
As our Break Through Mastermind gathering drew to a close, we returned to a question that I hope will stay with each of us:
What is the awakening you want next?
Not the awakening you think you should want or the dream that would impress someone else, but the one that feels deeply, authentically yours. We may find that our next awakening is not always about becoming someone new. Maybe it will be about remembering who we are beneath the fears, expectations, and limitations we've accumulated along the way.
And then finding the courage to live from that truth.

I'd love to hear what's awakening in you. And if you're ready to explore these questions more deeply, I invite you to join us at an upcoming Breakthrough Masterminds gathering, workshop, or retreat. Join us for our next Break Through Mastermind gathering, where we will explore the L in BALANCE: Lead, a conversation about exerting our will -- knowing what we want and mustering the courage and strength to bring it into being. Together, we can create space for the clarity, courage, and connection that make transformation possible.
